What is your health worth?

Writer: RT DrakeRT Drake

Have you ever felt discouraged, stuck or overwhelmed with your fitness goals?

Welcome to the large majority of people - fitness can be outright confusing, daunting, intimidating, or simply not effective.

Fitness should be something for you that achieves what you need in a timely fashion without feeling overwhelmed.  It’s very easy to bite off more than you can chew, push yourself too hard OR simply stay in your routine of sitting around wishing to feel better.

Coaching bridges the gap between inefficiency and efficiency.  Getting a plan of attack based on your particular needs, injuries, and body type can negate YEARS of hitting your head against the wall.

As a coach myself, I know how different having a guide makes on your overall results and progress.  I’ve also had coaches throughout my life in various ways.  A coach keeps you accountable to what you say you will do.  For example, I currently pay for both a therapist (mental coach!) and a business coach.

What I’ve spent on both of these services is worth far more than the monthly commitment of payment.  And I think that’s the most important piece I want to talk about today.  What is your health worth to you?

What is coaching and why does it matter?

Would you ever see a professional athlete working without a coach?

The answer should be a resounding NO!

Now I know that you are most likely not an elite level athlete…but think about it for a second.  An elite level athlete has gotten to where they are for various reasons.  They put in the work, have natural gifts, have the support…and have the coaching.  You would think that someone like Lebron James doesn’t need a coach anymore because “he can do it on his own”.

But at the same time I’m sure you probably think it’s something that is HIS livelihood, so it makes sense to spend money on coaching.  (Which BTW, I heard that he spends 1.5 million dollars a year on his body!)

Now you don’t need to be the best basketball player possibly ever to want/need a coach.  I just wanted to illustrate that even the best athletes in the world need coaching.

A coach can help serve many roles for you:

  • A guide to help you stay on the path to reach your goals

  • A motivator to push you when you don’t feel like exercise

  • A problem solver who can adapt to what you need in the moment

  • A programmer who takes over all the progressions, weights, reps…everything you need

The BIGGEST benefit to coaching in my opinion is the accountability that another person provides.  At the end of the day the thing that will get you results is the consistency of exercise.  What gets you 2-3x a week is what will be the ultimate factor into success.

You also have someone to “go through this with”.  Having someone in your corner can give you the confidence that you can get through hard things.  That you can accomplish those lofty goals of yours!

Lastly, the need to PAY for something more than just $15 dollars a month can motivate you to not waste the money, to not miss a session.  There’s a reason coaching appears expensive  and that is part of it.  To make it worthwhile, you need to put money into something.

Common Misconceptions

Here at Forever Fit Method we luckily have been able to retain many members for long periods of time.  (Truthfully doing this gym thing for 2 years is about the length of time that you need to transform your life!)

However when someone does decide to leave here, I usually get a few reasons.

“I can do this on my own”

Ah, I’ve heard this so many times.  After getting some momentum in the gym I’ve heard clients tell me that they have learned enough and can now do this on their own.

So often do I reach back out to these people 6 months after leaving only to find out that they haven’t gotten back into an exercise routine.

This is one of the worst things that can happen…the perceived ability to “do it on your own” left you without a plan, without a coach, without progress.  If anything you may have erased all the progress you had prior to getting coached.  This leads to burn out, to being disheartened and overall disappointed in yourself.

There is no need for ego when it comes to exercise, not many people can truly do it correctly, efficiently on their own without some serious exercise knowledge.  I’m talking about knowing how to program for yourself, how to choose the right weights, intensity, and movements that will have the best impact.

On the other hand, I’ve heard many times that a roadblock to getting training is ….

“I’m not fit enough for a trainer”

This doesn’t make sense to me at all!!

I can understand the fear of being very out of shape and for that to become very apparent on day 1.  I can imagine how that can lead to feeling less than.

However, it’s just an excuse.  The reason you GO to a trainer is because you are not in shape.  It’s because you need that help.  There is nothing wrong with seeking help when you need it.  That stigma of “looking like an idiot” does not exist in a coach relationship.  (Atleast, when it comes to the trainers who work here…there is no judgement).

Don’t waste your time doing nonsense exercises trying to get in shape for a trainer…get in shape faster working with a trainer and save your valuable time.

Benefits of coaching

If you don’t know by now, I think coaching is pretty awesome.

Let me rattle off a few big reasons as to why coaching is the answer to that feeling of  overwhelm, fear, insecurity and lack of discipline.

Fitness coaches can do the following:

  • Customize workouts and nutrition plan that align with goals and abilities

    • Ex: a 50 year old experiencing back pain can get customized plans to target back muscles in a safe way, strengthening over time, solving the back pain issue.

  • Accountability to keep you on track, even on days that you don’t want to get out of bed.

    • Many, many times clients have told me that if they didn’t have a session planned, they would have slept in!  That’s a huge win because it makes the days that you feel good even easier to get to!

  • Expert guidance to avoid injuries and plateaus

    • Proper form will help to keep you injury free.  If you are injury free, you don’t need to take breaks from training to give your body time to heal.

    • A balance of movements will ensure that you don’t plateau and that you are able to continue to make changes even after months, or years!

  • Confidence builder

    • Coaches can help you to overcome doubt while also celebrating small victories.  A coach is on your team through and through.  Again, over the years I’ve had many clients tell me how they gained confidence in the gym that translated to real life!

Why coaching is a worthwhile investment

Yes coaching costs more than a membership to a gym.

However there is a difference between seeing coaching as a COST or as an INVESTMENT.

A cost is something that is a bit negative in tone.  We all want to limit costs so that we can spend money on the things that we VALUE.

As a business owner I need to consider the COST of various things such as software, utilities, and rent.

I also need to consider the VALUE of something like the business coaching I do.  I see coaching as an investment that will pay off.  And that’s exactly what it has done since I’ve started.  It has paid off.

Here are some big reasons why coaching is valuable:

  • Time efficient

    • Coaching cuts out the trial and error, helping clients get the most out of the time they are able to commit to the gym.

    • Instead of spending 90 minutes going from various machines in the gym on your own, why not spend 45 minutes of directed exercise?  You can save so much time by getting rid of the planning and figuring out what to do with your time in the gym.

    • By doing the right movements, at the right weight, at the right time will make a big difference in overall results.

  • Long term impact

    • When coached you will be creating habits that will last for the long term.  Habits of getting up 2-4x a week and going to the gym.  Habit of doing the right movements, the habit of pushing yourself more than you think you can.

    • The real results and life changing stuff happens after years of exercise.  (Sorry but that’s the truth!)

  • Health is wealth!

    • Coaching is an investment in your future health.  What type of quality of life do you want in 10, 20, 30  years?  Do you want to be able to move on  your own?  Do you want to take trips and be able to walk everywhere?  Do you want to get up and down the floor with grandkids?  All of this is possible if you have your HEALTH.

    • We only get one body in this life.  We get to chose how we use the body, and ultimately your quality of life.

    • I know for me, it is vitally important to always be able to go for long hikes, to run around with kids, and then grandkids…and to generally feel good when waking up in the morning.  It’s worth everything I can give right now, to feel that way in the future.

    • Our oldest client is just above 80 years old and she still travels all around the world, is a helper to other friends her age that don’t move as well as her, as well as able to recover from falls with good balance, to live the life she wants! (she’s been coached for 10+ years)

Is coaching for you?

I’ll keep this short, if by now you’ve read all of this then you probably have a sense of coaching and if it’s for you.  If you still aren’t sure, here’s a quick checklist to figure out if coaching is for you.

  • Do you feel stuck or unsure how to progress?

  • Do you need accountability to stay consistent?

  • Are you looking for a personalized approach to your goals?

If you say YES to any of those 3 questions, a coach can help vastly.

Coaching is also for everybody.  Like I said above, Lebron James has a coach.  So you can have a ton of experience in the gym but need that accountability to really push through those tough days.  Maybe you are new to exercise and don’t want to get hurt.  Whatever side of the spectrum you are on, coaching can help you from where you are at right now.

Take the next step towards your goals!

Getting coaching is simply the catalyst for a faster, safer, and more sustainable path to your goals.  There’s no denying that fact.  If you want to achieve something  in 6 months (looking at you summertime!) then it’s possible to get there if you start NOW.

Your goals aren’t as far off as you might think.  Your goals are in reach.  Let me help you get there with expert guidance, unwavering support, and a plan designed just for you.
